Let Them Say

ree

I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but their conversation kept floating to my table as I ate my lunch.

Two ladies, sipping cocktails and munching on nuts. Then I heard it:

“You know, buying that property now that you’re not married will kinda chase men away. It has a way of making it difficult to settle down.”

In that moment, I lost my appetite. My mind immediately raced through the stereotypes that limit some women:

  • Stay in an abusive relationship because of what people will say.

  • Don't aspire for that leadership position; a family oriented woman shouldn't be that ambitious

  • Don’t speak up about sexual harassment, you’ll be blamed for it, and told you “caused” it.

  • Hold your tongue in meetings otherwise, you’ll be labelled “difficult.”

I wish I could walk up to the ladies and share a story of a Big Sis I heard a while ago. She was told something similar when she opted to acquire a property in a luxurious part of Lagos. She went ahead anyway.

Not only did she acquire the property, but she met “The Man” in the same neighbourhood and married him.

Would women be chased away if a man acquires a property before marriage?

It’s always best to listen to what God has to say rather than what people say.

Let Them Say!

When my bill arrived, I flipped the POS slip over and wrote this note. As I walked out, I dropped it on their table:

Your success isn’t a repellant. it’s a welcome sign for the right man. Keep growing, keep glowing. The one who matters will step up, not step away.

Yup! I said what I said!

… Oops! I mean I wrote what I wrote.
